Happy Birthday & Christmas 2013

December 19, 2013

I got two new guns for my birthday and Christmas, a Daisy 853C and Daisy 853CM.

The front sight mount on the 853CM is not what I would like.

You can see from the photo below that the mounting that clamps on the barrel does not have the clearance it needs to let it seat correctly in the mounting grooves.

I think I can grind just a little material from each clamp block to provide the clearance that's needed, but it seems nuts to have to start making modifications to a brand new gun to make it go together correctly.

Got an e-mail response from Daisy (faster than their promised 5 days) and they say I have the mounting blocks on upside down. Hmm.. maybe I do. I'm pretty sure they were on the sites this way when I got them however, and the instructions in the manual say nothing about one side being tapered. So it's still all their fault ;-) Just kidding.

Got a chance to work on the sight. Turned the mounting blocks over and here's the result

Definitely a better fit. I think with a little filing it can be even better ;-)

Compare the fit on the sites compared to the barrel. Why not have them both fit so nicely.
Why am I making a such a big deal out of this? Well... I had to adjust the sites up about 10 clicks from center to get the elevation right. If the front sight came down just a bit, the rifle would hit a little lower and I could adjust the sights back toward the center. That would give more adjustment for shooting at farther distances.

Here are the two rifles
853C - Walnut stock, with mico adjustable sites. 853CM - Polymer stock, diopter sights.
