August 10, 2009 - Bringing the boat homeI bought the boat from Mr. Ray Steely. He stored it in a barn in Custar, Ohio. He had kept it inside when it wasn't in the water and the excellent condition its in is a testimony to his care.

The previous owner and the new owner in the barn
where the boat has been stored for years. The excellent condition of the boat is a testament to the care Mr. Steely gave the boat. |
I arrived a little before 3PM. Mr. Steely helped me get hooked up and we got one of the tail/stop lights working. Gave up on the other and headed home at 3:45.
I got home about 6PM and had to take the header out of the garage door opening (I had extended the door opening when I owned the
SeaRay and put this header board in to close the gap between the garage door and the larger door opening when I sold the SeaRay).
 |
Will that big boat fit in that little garage? If I
take the header board out of the garage door opening it will
(just).

It fits. We had to move the mast over so that it
wasn't lined up with the garage door handle as that stuck
down enough to interfere. It's that close. Probably just two
inches of clearance. The S2actually has a smaller beam than the
SeaRay so it was easier to get through the door. The SeaRay
had about one inch of clearance on either side. The S2 had
probably four to six inches on each side.
Note my custom hitch/master cylinder cover. Gotta
keep the rain out of the master cyclinder.

The Durango got about 16MPG going to Custar. It got 11.1 MPG coming home pulling the boat. It pulled fine. I don't know that I ever went over 65mph but it ran just fine at that speed. I wish I had taken my truck. It gets better mileage and right now, diesel fuel costs less than gasoline. I was worried that it might rain, and the tires on the truck are practically bald. I figured hydroplaning while pulling a 3000lb boat would not be fun so I took the Durango. Gotta get new tires on the Ford.
Oh, an interesting item. Mr, Steely found that he had purchased the S2 on August 10th (today's date) in 1984 ( think it was 84).
